Here is some advice on what to avoid doing on your school council’s Facebook page.
- Do not post about politics
That includes what is happening at the local level. You are sure to offend someone. Remember this is not the school council’s role. - Do not post photos of children at school
Remember to always get permission from the school’s administration when posting photos of children to your school council’s Facebook page. You will want to speak with administration to make sure you are following the school’s/board’s policy and getting the necessary permission. - Do not post your personal opinions on school issues
Always remember that you represent school council and this is not a forum for you to voice your own personal views. - Do not let comments, good or bad, remain without a response
Even a simple reply of “thanks for sharing” is better than letting it linger. - Do not let parents post about their businesses
Stop it before it starts. If someone asks, say no. Remind them that this is not the forum for that. Otherwise, you will have a floodgate of these requests and promotional posts. These in turn will turn off your social media community. - Do not pretend you didn’t make a mistake if you did
Acknowledge errors and move on. Facebook moves quickly, so it will blow over as long as you’re up front. Your community will appreciate your honesty. We all make mistakes, what matters is how we handle them. - Do not over post
It can be hard to choose the best items to post, but if you overload your audience, they’ll start ignoring you. Start slow and get into a rhythm with posting. Gauge your audience and see what type of response you get.
Knowing what not to do will go a long way in helping to build engagement and involvement with your school council’s Facebook page.
