The end of the school year is fast approaching, here are some great ideas on events to wrap up the school year.
Volunteer Appreciation Lunch
The end of the school year is a perfect time to say thanks to your school volunteers for another successful year. A great idea is to get takeout from dining establishments that have supported your group throughout the year to show your appreciation for their investment in your school community. If lunch doesn’t fit in with your volunteers schedule, another great idea is to offer a quick breakfast with options that volunteers can grab and take with them on their way to work.
Movie Night
What better way to mark the end of the school year than with a movie night. For an added touch have kids and parents show up in pajamas. Pass out free popcorn or charge a small fee for concessions to give a slight boost to your end of council revenues. Not sure which movie to pick? Going with a popular newly released hit is always a safe bet. You may want to check with your school administration to see if your school board has a licensing agreement in place such as with Criterion Pictures (www.criterionpic.com). This will allow you for a fee to screen movies that are in between coming out of movie theatres and being offered to the public via DVD, Blu-ray, on-demand, etc.
Awards Ceremony
Recognize the school’s other students with an awards ceremony. Work with teachers to reward not just kids who excel in academics and sports, but also those who are good citizens in other ways.
Ice Cream Social
Who doesn’t love ice cream on a hot day? You might be able to connect with local grocery stores who may give you a discount on the basics. You might even be able to find a vendor that still offers prepackaged ice cream cups or frozen yogurt cups. My children’s school reaches out to a local ice cream truck vendor and they provide ice cream cones on the last day of school. For those with dietary restrictions be sure to offer other cold treats.
Picnic or Potluck
Another great idea is to have a barbecue picnic or pot luck on either the last day of school or on your school’s outdoor play day. This types of get together is a great way to pull your school community together and break bread with one another while celebrating another positive school year.
Community Cleanup
The last days of the academic year is an especially good time for kids to look beyond their school walls. Cleaning up a section of your community, such as a park is a great way to encourage and reinforce the message of giving back.
School Beautification
Had a harsh winter? Have kids beautify the school grounds by planting flowers or bulbs. Working on outdoor projects such as building and painting benches or other items in the school yard.
