Being elected new Parent Council Chair can be overwhelming to start. Here are a couple of items to remember when settling in your new role.
- Remember to Breathe
Do not get overwhelmed. Try not to worry to much about every little thing. It is okay to make a few mistakes. You are only human, no one is expecting you to be perfect. - Remember to Communicate
Communication is key in this role. Be mindful of communicating in ways that will present you as a person who is approachable, proactive and reachable. - Remember to Stay Organized
Whether you use binders, notebooks, Google Drive or some other system, make sure you have a system in place that works for you. Set some time aside each week to organize and keep up with things. - Remember to Not be Afraid to Accept All Help
Get out of the mindset that people have to commit to a certain level of volunteering. If someone wants to help, let them. Be resourceful and find a way to let them help in a way that works for them. - Remember to Talk to Teachers
Find out what the teachers on staff would like from your group. You might be surprised by their insight and suggestions. - Remember to Setup a Meeting with the Principal
Setup a meeting with the Principal and get a feel for how your principal prefers to communicate, whether it be email, text, phone or in-person be willing to adapt.
