-what parent engagement has meant to me.
Parent engagement? What is that?
That was my mindset seven years ago when my daughters entered the school system. They were, until the age of nine and eight respectively in a Montessori school.
I was approached by the principal of their elementary school to join the parent council. I did, albeit not knowing exactly what I was signing up for. Fast forward seven years and I am still an involved parent. Being able to have a say in your child’s education is an experience no parent should miss. Being engaged gives you a bird’s eye view of the day to day running of the school and subsequently your child’s educational requirements.
Attending school events and supporting the various ventures not only provides a feeling of self-pride but it makes a difference in your child’s well-being knowing that mom is not only there for me but for my school. Being one of the loudest spectators on the sideline at a sporting event does have its privileges and advantages. Wearing your child’s school spirit wear not only to events but regularly shows you are locked in to both your child and their school.
The look on my eldest daughter’s face when she discovered that I had moved on to her high school parent council was priceless. She really thought that she had got rid of “school mom” once she entered high school but I had other plans. Now she is proud to have mom walk through school, knowing that someone is looking out for both her and her friends via parent engagement.
DREAM BIG
Every parent wants to “DREAM BIG” for their child and I am no exception. Parents Engaged In Education is the forum for dreaming big. They embody the parent engagement concept and are making a difference by encouraging parents to DREAM BIG and make an impact in both their schools and communities.
